Jim Brochu, Broadway and Television Actor, Writer, Director & Producer.
Description & Links: (MP3 Segments are below)
1: Stephen welcomes the listeners with an overview of this week's show and discussion of various current topics.
2: Hot Wheels segment, Stephen discusses the 2008 Nissan Versa 1.8S Sedan.
3, 4, 5 & 6: Stephen interviews Jim Brochu. Jim is playing Zero Mostel in Zero Hour at the New Conservatory Theatre Center 25 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco. NOVEMBER 7 - 25: Wednesdays - Saturdays 8pm,
Sunday at 2pm (No Show November 22)
In award-winning actor Jim Brochu's tribute to theatre legend Zero Mostel, a naïve reporter attempts to interview the famously volatile artist, prompting an explosion of memory, humor, outrage and juicy backstage lore. Mostel is remembered for his comedic genius and his definitive roles (Fiddler on the Roof, Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, TheProducers), but in the 1950's he was equally known for his place on McCarthy's infamous Hollywood blacklist. Brochu's striking portrayal brings all of Mostel's swagger, ferocity, intelligence and fantastic wit back to the stage in this one-man tour-de-force.
A native of Brooklyn, Jim
got his BA in English from St. Francis College (Brooklyn) and made his Broadway debut (on stage) as Christopher Sly in a revival
of Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew. His off-Broadway credits include Robert Lowell’s Endicott And The Red Cross at the American Place Theatre, Ephraim Kishon’s Unfair To Goliath at the Cherry Lane Theatre, Avery Korman’s Skye at Lincoln Center and Frank Loesser’s Greenwillow for the Equity Library Theatre. In 2003, Jim picked up two Theatre L.A. Ovation Award nominations: Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in The Big Voice: God or Merman? - for playing himself, and with composer-partner Steve Schalchlin, for Best Musical. The Big Voice also won the 2003 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Score of a Musical and was included in the Top 10 Best Theatre Lists in both Los Angeles and Dallas that year.
His television work includes regular stints as Father James on All My Children, Judge Julius Weyburn on The Young And The Restless, Officer Jerry Chandler on the cult-classic Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and the befuddled bailiff on NBC’s Sirota’s Court with Michael Constantine. His acting career has taken him to regional stages all over the United States, including the Washington, D.C. Theatre Club, the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, S.T.A.G.E.S. Repertory Theatre in Houston, among others. Recently, Jim Brochu’s caricature was hung on the wall of Sardi’s Restaurant in New York City, a singular tribute to a thirty-year show business career as an actor, writer, director and producer. In 2005, he and his partner Steve SchachlIn one the 2005 Los Angeles Stage Alliance Ovation Award for the show The Big Voice: God or Merman? as Best Musical, presented by legendary Broadway composer, Jerry Herman.
7: Stephen closes the show with discussion on various topics.

SYR Radio Show ~~~ Scheduled Broadcast: OCTOBER 20 (re-broadcast from Sept. 22)

Singer: Michelle Pereira
Description & Links: (MP3 Segments are below, Description and image from Michelle's MySpace page )
. . . 1 & 2: Stephen and Tony welcome the listeners with an overview of this week's show.
. . .
. . . 3, 4, 5 & 6: Stephen interviews Singer Michelle Pereira, on the phone from Portugal, and they play 4 tracks from her upcoming CD, In My Life: Title track, Maria Lisboa, Lagrima, & Chuva. (one track on each segment) Her CD is introducing American audiences to a traditional Portugese musical style called Fado. Some background:
. . . In 1996 with $50 in her pocket and a dream worth a million she moved to NYC.
After 3 long months, Michelle was hired for the First International Tour of FAME The Musical in Berlin, Germany.
The years following brought The US Premiere of JUST SO (Cameron Mackintosh), FASCINATING GERSHWIN (Florida Rep), NUNSENSE (PPAC), Tony n Tina’s Wedding (Boston & Off-Broadway) The National Tour of THE WHO'S TOMMY, a million productions of GREASE & GODSPELL & NUNSENSE.
. . . In 2004, Michelle was hired to play one of the lead roles opposite Val Kilmer in the US Premiere of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles. The DVD is in stores now. While looking up music at a Hollywood music store, Michelle came across a book called: Songs From the Soul of Portugal. "Like many first generation Americans, I knew so little about my heritage. I didn't realize they even had songs there! What I found was that few people knew anything about the most western country in Europe and even sadder, could point to it on a map."
. . . On September 2005 Michelle boarded a plane for Lisbon without knowing a soul or speaking a word of Portuguese to see if this music was still alive and being sung.
The Washington Post describes it: “The traditional Portuguese music known as Fado is not for the timid. Passionate and uninhibited, it revels in drama, diving recklessly into the dark pathos of the human heart. In the hands of its best interpreters, Fado's power can be primal and almost overwhelming -- and it's starting to catch on with audiences around the world”.
. . . Because this style of music has never been written down, Michelle went to every Fado house she could find in Lisbon with a recorder in hand. With a dictionary, she would write out the words phonetically and then translate the poems into English. In May 2006, Michelle was invited to be the first foreigner to sing professionally as a house singer at Casa do Fado in Lisbon.
